Zollner starts construction of its second plant in Costa Rica

Cartago, May 23, 2024. Following the announcement last December of its expansion in Costa Rica with an investment of $100 million and the hiring of 400 new positions, the electronic manufacturing services firm Zollner, placed today the cornerstone of its second plant in La Lima Free Trade Zone, in Cartago.

Zollner, a company of German origin, chose to grow in Costa Rica after evaluating other options and finding that the conditions offered by the country were optimal for building a second manufacturing plant, which will have a construction area of over 8,000 square meters.

According to the company’s 2030 strategy, this new plant will bring new processes, increase demand for local suppliers, and eventually triple the company’s exports.

“Costa Rica is the ideal place for Zollner to continue growing in Latin America. Since its foundation in 2015, we have found the support and necessary conditions to reinvest (qualified available personnel, alliances with Technical Colleges in Cartago such as COVAO, CUC, and of course, the support of the Costa Rican Institute of Technology (TEC)), build a new plant, double our operations, and ideally triple the exports we produce and send out of the country. This will result in the creation of 400 new jobs in Cartago, as well as the strengthening of productive linkages with more than the 45 local suppliers we have,” said Octavio Matus, General Manager of Zollner in Costa Rica.

Zollner is an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) company that manufactures high-value electronic products for the automotive, aerospace, medical, and consumer electronics industries in the United States, Mexico, and Costa Rica. As part of this expansion, the company began implementing a shared services center for Global Engineering, Marketing, Sales, and Supply Chain.

Laura López, General Manager of the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER), added that “as Zollner is the only EMS in Costa Rica, it contributes to the value proposition and makes the country increasingly attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI). We hope that Zollner continues to grow in the country, generating more linkages with local companies and employment. Likewise, we reiterate PROCOMER’s commitment in all its expansion processes in the country.”

Currently, Zollner Costa Rica employs 380 people from the province of Cartago and works with around 40 national suppliers in areas such as anti-static and cardboard packaging solutions, injection molding, and precision mechanics.
